Therapeutic Recreation Services

York Care Centre adopts a therapeutic approach to recreation and leisure programming. This approach is rooted in the goal of honoring each person’s story, and empowering them to make their own choices about their lifestyle. Programs are offered from a person-centred approach, providing meaningful engagement and promoting their own personal purpose in life.

Below is a list of some of the goals the Department of Therapeutic Recreation strive for:

  • Assist in reminiscence
  • Enhances socialization with other residents and staff members
  • Increases physical activity
  • Provides sensory stimulation

There are multiple Therapeutic Recreation Coordinators on staff. Each residential unit has its own monthly activity calendar; these are posted in each individual resident’s room, on the website and on the daily information boards on each unit. In addition, residents can check the bulletin boards daily for updates on the day’s events.

Spiritual Care Services

York Care Centre has a Spiritual Care Coordinator on staff. They meet with the residents and their families on an individual basis and coordinate the Spiritual Care program within YCC.

The Spiritual Care program strives to be ecumenical in nature. The Spiritual Care Coordinator, coordinates with carious different faith groups to meet the needs of the residents. The Spiritual Care Coordinator engages the residents in one-on-one sessions as needed to ease loneliness or distress they may feel as they are dealing with their new surroundings and decline in health and abilities.
